6 Best WordPress Security Plugins (2026): Tested for Speed & Clutter

On this page
Short answer: Wordfence is the most complete of the free WordPress security plugins we tested (firewall, malware scanner, login security), but it was also the heaviest: 10.5 MB of memory and 26 database tables. Kadence Security (formerly Solid Security / iThemes Security) is the lighter all-rounder at 3.8 MB. For spam, Antispam Bee added nothing measurable and needs no account, and Simple Cloudflare Turnstile adds a free, privacy-friendly CAPTCHA to logins and forms. We run Antispam Bee and Turnstile on wpglory.com.
WordPress security plugins protect your site in three main ways: they block bad traffic and brute-force logins, they scan files for malware, and they harden settings that attackers like to abuse. Anti-spam plugins do a related job for comments and forms. Most sites need one security plugin and one anti-spam tool, not five overlapping ones.
We tested four popular WordPress security plugins and two anti-spam plugins on the same clean WordPress 7.1.3 site, one at a time, and measured what each costs your server and your dashboard. Security features are hard to test safely in a lab, so we describe them from each plugin’s settings and documentation, and we measure everything else.

Wordfence stands out. It added 10.5 MB of PHP memory to every request and created 26 database tables, more than the other five combined. That is the cost of running a full firewall and scanner inside WordPress. Kadence Security created 14 tables and 8 cron jobs; All-In-One Security created 8 tables and 5 cron jobs. Sucuri created no tables at all.

Do you need a security plugin at all?
Good hosting, updates and strong passwords do most of the work. Many hosts already run a server firewall and malware scanning, and Cloudflare can block a lot of bad traffic before it reaches your site.
WordPress security plugins add a second layer inside WordPress: login protection, two-factor authentication, file change alerts and an audit log of who did what. If your host already provides a firewall and scanning, a lighter plugin focused on logins and hardening is often enough.
1. Wordfence: most complete free WordPress security plugin
8.5/10 Free plan v9.0.2 · 5 million+ installs · 4.7★ on WordPress.org
Wordfence is the best-known name among WordPress security plugins, with more than 5 million active installs and 4.7 stars from 5,034 reviews. The free version includes an endpoint firewall that runs inside WordPress, a malware scanner, login security with two-factor authentication, and brute-force protection. Free users get new firewall rules and malware signatures 30 days after paying users.
It is also the heaviest plugin in this test. It added 10.5 MB of memory, 26 tables, 14 options, 6 cron jobs, a Wordfence menu with 10 items and a dashboard activity widget. In our lab it also showed a warning that it is not designed to run in a browser-based environment like Playground. That warning is specific to the test environment; on real hosting you will not see it.
Pros
- Firewall, scanner and login security in one free plugin
- 2FA included free
- Huge user base and 4.7-star rating
Cons
- Heaviest here: 10.5 MB memory and 26 tables
- Free firewall rules arrive 30 days later than premium
- Many settings and emails to tune
2. Kadence Security: lighter all-rounder
9.2/10 Free plan v10.0.6 · 700,000+ installs · 4.6★ on WordPress.org
Kadence Security is the new name of Solid Security, which was previously called iThemes Security. It focuses on hardening and login protection: brute-force protection, two-factor authentication, file change detection, and security tweaks you can switch on from one screen. Of the full WordPress security plugins here, it gave us the best balance of protection and weight.
It added 3.8 MB of memory, 14 tables and 8 cron jobs, and a Security menu plus an admin-bar item. One change you will notice immediately: it hides the Theme File Editor and Plugin File Editor menus. That is good security practice, because attackers who get into an admin account often use those editors to inject code, but it can surprise you if you rely on them.
Pros
- Good hardening and login protection
- Much lighter than Wordfence (3.8 MB)
- Disables the built-in file editors by default
Cons
- 14 tables and 8 cron jobs
- Name changes can make documentation confusing
3. All-In-One Security (AIOS): most free hardening options
8.7/10 Free plan v5.4.10 · 1 million+ installs · 4.7★ on WordPress.org
All-In-One Security (AIOS), from the team behind UpdraftPlus, packs a long list of free hardening features: login lockdown, renaming the login page, a basic firewall, file permission checks and database prefix tools. Its AIOS menu has 12 items, the most of any security plugin in this test.
It added 3.8 MB of memory, 8 tables and 5 cron jobs. After activation it redirected us to its dashboard and showed a “thank you” notice promoting its premium version, which is why its admin score is lower.
Pros
- Lots of free hardening features
- Rename login page and login lockdown
- 1 million+ installs, 4.7 stars
Cons
- Upsell notice and setup redirect
- 12-item menu takes time to learn
4. Sucuri Security: light monitoring and audit log
9.5/10 Free plan v2.8.1 · 600,000+ installs · 4.2★ on WordPress.org
The free Sucuri Security plugin is a monitoring tool more than a shield. It logs security events (logins, plugin changes, file edits), checks your files against the official WordPress versions, runs a remote malware scan and offers one-click hardening. The firewall Sucuri is known for is a paid cloud service. Among WordPress security plugins, it is the one to pair with a host or Cloudflare firewall.
It is light: 2.4 MB of memory, no tables and one cron job. Its rating is the lowest of the group at 4.2 stars, partly from users who expected the paid firewall to be included.
Pros
- Light: 2.4 MB, no tables
- Useful audit log and file integrity check
- Works well next to a host or Cloudflare firewall
Cons
- No firewall in the free plugin
- Lowest rating of the group (4.2)
Anti-spam: Antispam Bee and Cloudflare Turnstile
Spam is a security problem too: fake registrations, comment spam and contact-form floods waste time and can hide real attacks. These two tools are the ones we chose for wpglory.com after testing.
5. Antispam Bee: best comment anti-spam, no account needed
9.9/10 Free plan v2.11.13 · 700,000+ installs · 4.8★ on WordPress.org
Antispam Bee filters comment and trackback spam using local checks (honeypot fields, IP and country rules, regular expressions and your own spam history). It does not need an account or an API key, and it does not send comments to an external service, which makes it easy to use under GDPR.
It was the lightest plugin in this test: no measurable memory, no tables, no cron jobs and only a Settings item. We run it on wpglory.com.
Pros
- Lightest plugin tested: no measurable cost
- No account, no API key
- Privacy-friendly local checks
Cons
- Comments only; it does not protect contact forms
- Fewer reviews than the big names
6. Simple Cloudflare Turnstile: free CAPTCHA for logins and forms
9.5/10 Free plan v1.44.0 · 200,000+ installs · 4.6★ on WordPress.org
Simple Cloudflare Turnstile adds Cloudflare’s free Turnstile challenge to the login, registration, password reset and comment forms, and to popular form plugins and WooCommerce. Most visitors pass automatically without solving a puzzle. You need a free Cloudflare account to create a site key and secret key, but your domain does not have to use Cloudflare.
It added 0.7 MB of memory, no tables, and redirected us to its settings page on the first admin visit, which is reasonable because it does nothing until you add your keys. We use it on wpglory.com.
Pros
- Free and usually invisible to real visitors
- Protects login, comments and many form plugins
- Light: 0.7 MB, no tables
Cons
- Needs Cloudflare Turnstile keys
- Some in-app browsers struggle with the challenge

Which WordPress security plugins should you use?
Pick one security plugin and one anti-spam tool. Running two WordPress security plugins with overlapping firewalls or login rules causes lockouts and slowdowns.
- Want everything in one free plugin: Wordfence, if your hosting has memory to spare.
- Cheaper hosting or a host firewall already: Kadence Security or Sucuri Security for login protection, hardening and monitoring.
- Want to tweak every setting yourself: All-In-One Security.
- Comment spam: Antispam Bee.
- Bot logins and form spam: Simple Cloudflare Turnstile.
Security basics no plugin replaces
WordPress security plugins only help when the basics are in place:
- Keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated. Most hacked sites run outdated plugins.
- Use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication for every admin.
- Remove plugins and themes you do not use.
- Keep off-site backups, so you can restore quickly if something goes wrong.
- Choose hosting that isolates sites and patches the server for you.
Security and speed go together: a lighter stack has fewer things to patch. See our lightweight WordPress plugins test and our WordPress cache plugins comparison.
How we tested
Every plugin was installed from WordPress.org on a clean WordPress 7.1.3 site (PHP 8.3, Kadence theme) in WordPress Playground on 26 October 2026. We activated one plugin at a time, measured the site, then deactivated it again, so each result is compared with the same clean baseline. We loaded the home page as a logged-out visitor three times and kept the median PHP peak memory, counted the CSS and JavaScript the plugin added, and recorded database tables, options, scheduled cron jobs, admin menus, notices, dashboard widgets and any redirect on the first admin visit. Ratings, installs and versions come from the WordPress.org plugin directory on the same day.
We did not attack the test site; firewall and scanner features are described from each plugin’s own settings and documentation.
The WPGlory score rates what a plugin costs your site, not how many features it has: front-end weight 30%, server cost 20%, admin clutter 20%, WordPress.org rating 20% (weighted by the number of reviews) and maintenance 10%. Features are covered in the text. Read the full method.
FAQ
What is the best free WordPress security plugin?
Wordfence is the most complete free security plugin. If it is too heavy for your hosting, Kadence Security gives you strong login protection and hardening for about a third of the memory.
Do WordPress security plugins slow down a site?
They add server work on every request. In our test the cost ranged from nothing (Antispam Bee) to 10.5 MB of memory and 26 tables (Wordfence). None of these WordPress security plugins added files for visitors.
Can I use two WordPress security plugins together?
Avoid running two full security suites. Combining one security plugin with an anti-spam plugin such as Antispam Bee or Turnstile is fine.
Is Cloudflare Turnstile really free?
Yes. Turnstile is free; you only need a Cloudflare account to create the keys, and your domain does not need to use Cloudflare.
Final verdict
Wordfence for a full suite, Kadence Security for a lighter one
Among the WordPress security plugins we tested, Wordfence offers the most protection for free, at a real server cost. Kadence Security is the lighter all-rounder. Add Antispam Bee and Simple Cloudflare Turnstile to stop spam without annoying real visitors.
